Birmingham City have loaned midfielder Alfie Chang out to runaway League Two leaders Walsall for the remainder of the season.
Chang recently made his return from 17 months out with a serious knee injury and has built up his fitness in Blues’ under-21s of late. Blues boss Chris Davies used Chang as a substitute in the 2-1 win over Lincoln City in the FA Cup third round at the beginning of January.
But Chang was never going to dislodge Tomoki Iwata, Paik Seung-ho, Marc Leonard and Taylor Gardner-Hickman this season, so Blues have sent him out to play regular minutes with the Saddlers.
Chang is the second player Blues have loaned to Walsall this season and joins pal George Hall at the Poundland Bescot Stadium. Hall played 12 games for the Saddlers before suffering a hamstring injury in December and hopes to return before the season is out.
Walsall are managed by ex-Blues defender Mat Sadler and their squad also includes former Wast Hills academy graduates Ryan Stirk, Charlie Lakin and Rico Browne.
Chang, who has made 13 appearances in the Championship for Blues, will jostle with Stirk and Lakin for a place in Walsall’s midfield. Despite a mini wobble in recent weeks, the Saddlers still have a seven-point lead at the top of League Two, with a game-in-hand, and a superior goal difference to their rivals.
