Curtis Jones breaks Liverpool silence after Abdoulaye Doucoure clash with clear two-word message
Curtis Jones was shown a red card in Wednesday night's Merseyside Derby between Everton and Liverpool.
Curtis Jones has praised Liverpool's togetherness after a chaotic end to Wednesday night's Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. After Beto opened the scoring in the first half, James Tarkowski's 98th-minute equaliser cancelled out efforts from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah amid a pulsating 2-2 draw in what was the 120th and final contest between the two sides at Goodison Park.
But the drama didn't stop there as referee Michael Oliver dished out second yellow cards to Abdoulaye Doucoure and Jones for their involvement in a melee after the game. Oliver also showed Liverpool head coach Arne Slot and his assistant manager Sipke Hulshoff red cards.
Despite getting sent off, Jones has hailed the togetherness his side showed at Goodison Park during Wednesday night's clash. Writing on Instagram to his 1.7m followers, Jones said: "Always together!"
The England international replaced Gravenberch shortly after the hour-mark and had a hand in the Reds' second goal of the night as his shot ricocheted into the path of Salah - and left the Egypt star with little to do as he beat Jordan Pickford from close range. Jones, however, will now serve a one-match suspension in Liverpool's Premier League clash against Wolves this weekend, after being dismissed for just the second time in his Liverpool career.
Speaking to the ECHO - and several other publications - in the mixed zone after the game, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk accused Doucoure of antagonising Jones as the full-time whistle sounded out at Goodison Park. "I think the referee - and I told the referee - he didn't have it under the control we wanted," said Van Dijk. "I think some of the moments during the game, some fouls were easily given and some weren't and in the end these moments are decisive and for Doucoure to provoke the fans' triggers and that is absolutely normal.
"For Curtis to get a red, and everyone is jumping on it, in that case is a normal thing, but I tried to stay calmer and get everyone away because I know how much we need everyone on Sunday but when the ref gives the manager and assistant coach a red as well that's a bit strange, but it is what it is and we have to deal with that as well. And we will deal with it."
