Vincent Kompany has been slammed for his handling of Thomas Muller against Celtic with the Belgian accused of 'humiliating' the club legend.

The former Manchester City defender has received plenty of criticism in Germany following the poor display from his Bayern Munich superstars in the Champions League playoff with Brendan Rodgers' side. An Alphonso Davies leveller on the night in the final seconds of added-time sent the Bundesliga giants through 3-2 on aggregate - and broke the hearts of the Hoops and the large number of fans in the Allianz Arena.

Bayern great Muller has won a record 24 trophies with club including 12 Bundesliga titles, but the 35-year-old has been used as a bit-part player by Kompany. He was sent on for the last three minutes in Bayern's 2-1 win at Parkhead before getting just a 24-second cameo where he failed to touch the ball in the home leg as the German giants limped over the line.

And that sparked outrage from Germany's all-time record cap holder and TV pundit Lothar Matthaus. He said: "This was humiliating. It made me sad and I felt sorry for Thomas. I was shocked.

"Thomas Muller doesn’t need to get put through this. He is one of the greatest and most successful players of all time. Could Vincent Kompany not use another player for the last few seconds? If that is his future, then he should do something else. I don't think he enjoyed it. For what? So that he can be credited with another Champions League appearance? I would have felt stupid if I were him."
