Rangers manager Philippe Clement has been sacked.

The Rangers boss saw his side beaten by St Mirren on Saturday - a first Ibrox defeat to St Mirren since 1991 - with that disheartening loss coming hot on the heels of the shocking Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Queen's Park earlier this month. And that proved to be the final straw for the Gers board, who on Sunday night announced Clement's exit after 16 months at the helm.

Clement departs Rangers – 13 points adrift of city rivals Celtic at the top of the Premiership – at a time when the club are in talks about a multi-million investment by a United States-led consortium which includes Paraag Marathe, president of 49ers Enterprises.

A statement from Rangers on Sunday evening read: “Rangers Football Club can confirm it has tonight parted company with men’s first-team manager, Philippe Clement. The club would like to put on record their sincere thanks to Philippe for his hard work and dedication during his spell in charge. A further update from the club will follow in due course.”

Clement, who succeeded Mick Beale in October 2023 and led Rangers to the League Cup just two months after arriving, had been clinging on in the face of mounting pressure despite his side's inability to keep pace with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership - and with the growing prospect of ending the season without a trophy, with only the Europa League standing as a realistic chance.

CEO Patrick Stewart insisted that the club would stick by the boss earlier this week, with fans spirits rising after news of the 49er Enterprises takeover bid was revealed. However, the Premiership setback against St Mirren, occurring just hours after rivals Celtic faltered at Hibs, sealed Clement's fate.

Clement had described Saturday’s display in the 2-0 defeat by St Mirren as “by far the worst I’ve seen in all the time I’ve been here”.

Barry Ferguson, the iconic former captain is a prime candidate for the interim managerial role, potentially enlisting Neil McCann's assistance.
