Dominik Szoboszlai has downplayed the jubilant chants from the Liverpool away end that they're "gonna win the league" following a vital 2-0 win over rivals Manchester City.

Despite his goal and assist securing an 11-point lead at the summit for Liverpool, after Arsenal faltered against West Ham 24 hours earlier, Szoboszlai says he did not hear the supporters' songs because he was so tired at the Etihad.

And he emphasised the urgency to focus on their next fixture against Newcastle United in midweek.

With the title race heating up, asked about the Liverpool fans' song, he remarked: "I didn't hear it, I was so tired!

"We have to keep going and Newcastle is going to be a tough game and then 11 more games to go. It never ends so we have to keep calm and keep going and at the end hopefully, we will get there."

Following the Reds' tactics paying off handsomely at City, Szoboszlai continued: "We played with two number 10s and they managed the game almost 90 per cent but at the end the result is for us and we are happy to take the three points home."

"We were defending 30 metres from our goal and we gave everything. It is part of the game. Sometimes you don't have the ball and we are happy to take the three points."

The squad's laser focus now shifts to maintaining their lead as they prepare to host Newcastle before hosting Southampton at Anfield, which stands as their singular Premier League match in March.

Liverpool's first goal at City was the result of a cleverly worked corner routine, with Alexis Mac Allister passing to Szoboszlai, who then set up Salah for a deflected goal.

However, Szoboszlai later confessed it wasn't his finest assist, while Salah admitted the ball didn't go exactly as planned, despite his successful conversion.

Szoboszlai quipped: "It was not the best assist I gave to him! We practiced it yesterday and hopefully, we can do it more times. Finally, he could also find me - it does not happen every time!"
