Rangers boss Philippe Clement has been sent packing by the club shortly after a defeat to St Mirren.

The Belgian gaffer seemed like he was on borrowed time since the shocker Scottish Cup crash-out against Queen's Park earlier this month - but he stubbornly hung on despite growing calls for action from the Ibrox higher-ups.

Even with CEO Patrick Stewart batting away the sack chatter, pointing to Clement's Europa League triumphs this season as justification for his ongoing tenure, it wasn't enough in the end.

Post the shambolic loss to Stephen Robinson's crew, Clement spent Sunday hashing out a payoff deal with the board - this all coming fresh off the back of him signing a new contract pre-season kick-off.

Now, the Gers have given him the boot after his 16 months stint, preparing to usher in an interim boss till season's end, meanwhile poised on the cusp of a takeover by 49er Enterprises.

Following the day's mayhem at Ibrox, the club said: "Rangers Football Club can confirm it has tonight parted company with men's first-team manager, Philippe Clement.

"The club would like to put on record their sincere thanks to Philippe for his hard work and dedication during his spell in charge. A further update from the club will follow in due course."

Clement departs the club with Celtic holding a 13-point lead at the top, and no realistic chance of securing a trophy this season following their defeat in the Premier Sports Cup Final and the Queen's Park fiasco.

The Europa League remains the club's sole opportunity for silverware - but with several strong teams still in the competition, they face a tough challenge to claim the trophy, reports the Daily Record.

Fans flooded the announcement post on social media with angry comments, such as : "Now the coaching staff to be sacked.... come on. Don't keep the staleness and terrible goalkeeping standards of the last four years carry on along with sacking fitness coaches that have been here since Warburton and the other backroom staff."
