Philippe Clement GONE as Rangers board finally break cover after showdown talks with lame duck boss
A 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren proved to be the final straw after Clement clung on despite Queen's Park humiliation
Boss Philippe Clement has been shown the door by Rangers after a chaotic day in the wake of defeat to St Mirren.
The Belgian has looked like a dead man walking ever since the shock Scottish Cup humiliation at the hands of Queen's Park earlier this month - but clung on in the face of mounting pressure on the Ibrox board to pull the trigger, although CEO Patrick Stewart resisted sack calls, pointing to the manager's Europa League success this season as the of the reasons for keeping him in place.
Off the back of the nightmare result to Stephen Robinson's side Clement and the Rangers board were locked in talks on Sunday over a financial exit package - just months on from the Belgian penning a contract extension before a ball was kicked in the Premiership. The club have now mo axed the boss after 16 months at the helm, the club are set to appoint a temporary man in the dugout until the end of the campaign with the Light Blues on the brink of being taken over by 49er Enterprises.
After a dramatic day at Ibrox, a club statement read: "Rangers Football Club can confirm it has tonight parted company with men’s first-team manager, Philippe Clement. The club would like to put on record their sincere thanks to Philippe for his hard work and dedication during his spell in charge. A further update from the club will follow in due course."
Clement leaves the club with Celtic 13 points clear at the top and no realistic prospect of a trophy this season after losing the Premier Sports Cup Final and the Queen's Park debacle. The Europa League is the only chance for the club at silverware - but with some heavyweights left in the competition they face an uphill battle to lift the trophy.
