Steven Gerrard has become one of the front-running options to take over from Philippe Clement after Rangers sacked the Belgian.

Gerrard, currently between jobs, may well have already signalled his interest in returning to the Ibrox hotseat as he seeks to resurrect his managerial career.

Clement was axed on Sunday night amid a disappointing season with Rangers, highlighted by a lacklustre Premiership defeat to St Mirren.

Liverpool legend Gerrard, after departing Ibrox, faced challenges at Aston Villa and a stint at Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League. He was again left unemployed due to the threat of relegation.

As Rangers' title-winning former manager, Gerrard's name has been circulated as the potential new boss to replace Clement.

Speaking in 2022, Rangers hero Graeme Souness disclosed that Gerrard expressed a willingness to return when the time felt right: "I saw Steven a couple of weeks ago in Portugal.

"He seemed in fine form and I said to him: 'Are you wanting to go back? ' and he said give it a bit of time and I'll go back if something comes along that is interesting to him, back into the game.

"Would the supporters be happy with him going back? I'm not sure. They think he left them at a difficult time, I'm not sure."

However, fellow Rangers legend McCoist shared a different perspective last month, suggesting that Gerrard still has a strong following in Glasgow. McCoist remarked: "It wouldn't surprise me if Steven Gerrard came back to Ibrox.

"He's obviously held in really high regard by the supporters because of the league title he won, and his next job is going to be vitally important for him.

"Things haven't gone according to plan for him after he left Rangers. A little bit like Frank Lampard going to Coventry – his next appointment was really important to him as well."
