'We felt it' - Alexis Mac Allister makes Liverpool admission amid 'amazing' claim
Alexis Mac Allister has discussed the Liverpool midfield after the 2-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Wednesday evening
Alexis Mac Allister has saluted his "amazing" midfield colleagues after helping Liverpool extend their lead at the Premier League summit - and then welcomed the opportunity of a breather. The Reds are now 13 points clear at the top of the table from nearest challengers Arsenal after beating Newcastle United 2-0 at Anfield on Wednesday evening.
Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring early on before Mac Allister's fifth goal of the season shortly after the hour sealed victory for Arne Slot's side.
And the World Cup winner has expressed his delight at playing alongside Szoboszlai and fellow regular engine room starter Ryan Gravenberch.
"I love playing with these players," said Mac Allister. "I think they are amazing, not just Dom and Ryan but Wata (Wataru Endo), Curtis (Jones) and Harvey (Elliott). They are really good players. We work really hard and we know the ones who aren't playing are pushing us as well. That's really important.
"Dom is amazing, he loves to get into these positions. Me too, I do it maybe not as often as him but we love getting into those positions.
"Today the wingers passed the ball and we're really happy with that as well. It was a good goal, I haven't watched it back yet but the most important thing is that we won."
The game was the final of five in 15 days for Liverpool, in which they have also won at outgoing champions Manchester City and home to Wolves while drawing at neighbours Everton and Champions League contenders Aston Villa.
With the Reds out of the FA Cup, Slot's side have the rare luxury of a free weekend before they are again in action next Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie at French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
And Mac Allister added: "It was maybe a game different to what we would have expected as they (Newcastle) didn't press as they normally do. The team reacted really well and played the game that we had to play.
"It was really good, although to be fair we felt it a little bit today. We were a little bit tired. It is what it is, we love playing football. The most important thing is we got seven points (from the last three games) - that's really good.
"Everyone can see we feel strong at Anfield because the fans are with us and we can really feel it. It's really nice. We want to be stronger here and we know we have their support."
Asked if Liverpool holding such a big Premier League lead before March could affect their focus, Mac Allister said to LFC TV: "Not at all. Now we have to focus on resting, that's going to be really important.
"We have a long week so we can rest a bit and go again. We have a tough game against PSG and so many games coming up that are really exciting. Hopefully we can get to the target we want."
