Matt O'Riley told straight why Celtic move hasn't worked by Brighton boss as 'responsibility' dished out
The midfielder has struggled to find top form since leaving Celtic Park for the Premier League last summer
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler reckons injury woes have left Matt O'Riley in a "frustrating situation" following his summer move from Celtic.
The 24-year-old has faced a tough season in the Premier League following his record-breaking £25million move away from the Scottish Premiership champions - after he had to undergo ankle surgery in September after his debut was wrecked by a horror tackle from Crawley's Jay Williams. He marked his comeback to the team in November with the winner against Manchester City - but has yet to stake a claim for a regular spot in the Brighton starting line-up.
O'Riley has appeared just once off the bench in the last three games - in a six-minute cameo off the bench in the FA Cup win over Chelsea - and Hurzeler has previously questioned the fitness levels of the Danish international in the midst of a frustrating campaign. The 32-year-old boss now reckons that Seagulls' fans are yet to see the best of O'Riley following his Celtic departure due to injury woes limiting his ability to adjust to the English top flight "intensity."
Speaking to Sussex World about players hampered by injury like O'Riley, Hurzeler explained: "Everyone would understand if I say it’s a frustrating situation. I always try to be the leader and try to not talk about the problems, I try to find more solutions to them and that’s what we do.
"It's very frustrating for the individual players. It's our responsibility to be there for them, to give them the support they need to do the best rehab.
“Together with my medical staff, together with the physios, with the sports science, they try to give the best for the players. Hopefully the new players come back quickly and adapt quickly to the intensity of the Premier League.”
