Manchester United fans have moaned Danny Welbeck would still be their best striker.
Welbeck, 33, rolled back the years on Sunday afternoon as Brighton dumped Newcastle United out of the FA Cup in a thriller. The two teams couldn't be separated and the game went to extra time, when Welbeck hit the Magpies on the counter.
Solly March cut inside, picked out Welbeck, who dinked the ball over an onrushing Martin Dubravka.
“It’s a magnificent moment, great to get the winning goal, it was a solid team performance - there was a lot going on in that game, a lot of ups and downs," Welbeck said.
"We stuck together and I’m so proud of the lads - everyone’s buzzing. Newcastle are a really intense side with great players and are very dangerous but we stuck to our guns and put in a great shift.
"I’m feeling very good, fit, strong, and glad to be back after a little injury – thanks to my mum and dad for giving me the good genes!"
And his finish even impressed United fans, who yearned for the days a young Welbeck would run the line.
"What a finish Danny Welbeck man... He would still be our best striker," one fan sighed. While a second said: "Was sad to see him leave United, exactly the type of player who would be great for the club now..."
"Danny Welbeck left United 11 years ago, he’d be our best striker now," a third posted.
And another added: "Have mentioned it before but the fact that Danny Welbeck would be Arsenal and United's best centre-forward is hilarious man!"
United are currently struggling for goals, with question marks hovering over their striking duo of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
