Anthony Gordon red card decision made as Liverpool learn Newcastle fate for Carabao Cup final

Newcastle United will be without Anthony Gordon for the Carabao Cup Final next month - after making their appeal decision.

Newcastle United have reportedly made a decision regarding an appeal following Anthony Gordon's red card decision against Brighton at the weekend. Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie reckons that the Magpies won't appeal the decision, which means Gordon will miss the Carabao Cup Final game with Liverpool in 12 days' time.

Taking to X, Downie shared: "Newcastle will not appeal Anthony Gordon's red card against Brighton on Sunday. That means the winger will miss the next three matches, including the Carabao Cup Final next weekend."

The ex-Everton winger was shown a straight red card for pushing Seagulls' defender Jan Paul van Hecke's in the face during a moment of madness. The Magpies were dumped out of the FA Cup despite taking the lead against Fabian Hurzeler's side.

Alexander Isak scored from the spot to give Eddie Howe's side the lead, before Yankuba Minteh equalised before the brink of half-time. Gordon struggled to get into the game and his frustration was there for all to see when the 24-year-old was given his marching orders for lashing out unnecessarily.

The Magpies' winger, who is a boyhood Liverpool supporter and was subject to transfer interest from Anfield last summer, will now miss the Carabao Cup Final - having also missed their previous trip to Wembley in 2023. "It looks harsh, we'll have to analyse it properly," said Newcastle manager Howe in the immediate aftermath of the Brighton game.

"I've not seen a replay on it and I'm just going on my original view, I thought it looked harsh, but we'll see then see what we do. Possibly [appeal].

"I'd need to see it again to see what properly happened, it was a mass of bodies in my first viewing. Anthony didn't mean any harm. I've only seen him briefly, but he's disappointed."
