Feyenoord 0-2 Inter result - Champions League last-16 win for Inter with goals from Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez

Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez's goals either side of half-time secured victory for Inter Milan in the last-16, first-leg tie at Feyenoord, giving them a big advantage to take back to San Siro.

Robin van Persie's side, in just the former star striker's second game in charge, started superbly with on-loan Brighton & Hove Albion winger Ibrahim Osman a persistent danger. Only a smart save at his near post from Josep Martinez stopped him giving the hosts the lead early on.

Inter punished them on the break six minutes before the break in fantastic style as Marcus Thuram leapt up and volleyed home Nicola Barella's deep cross with the outside of his right foot.

Five minutes after the restart, the leg was effectively over as Piotr Zielenski found Lautaro Martinez in the box where he controlled and half-turned in one motion before firing high into the net.

The only blot on the night for Inter was the penalty which Zielinski failed to convert, albeit denied by a fine full-length save from Timon Wellenreuther.

The sides will meet again next Tuesday with the Dutch side facing a mammoth task to repeat their play-off heroics against AC Milan in the same city.

TNT Sports' panelists were baffled at the events prior to the Inter penalty as, with regular spot-kick taker Hakan Calhanoglu on the bench, Simone Inzaghi indicated that Piotr Zielinski should take the kick - which he missed.

"Normally you know who's on penalties before you get one," Lescott said on TNT Sports.

"That's the biggest surprise, that they had to look over to the manager to know who was taking it."

Owen Hargreaves added: "Normally the captain and the best player just grabs the ball and takes it."

"He shows great composure," Lescott said on TNT Sports, praising his role in the goal.

"He looked very comfortable out there, he cut inside and picked the right pass."

They rode out a difficult first half hour but they will be delighted taking a two-goal lead back to San Siro.

A very unnecessary one stopping Feyenoord taking a quick throw in with the final whistle about to be blown.

But Wellenreuther comes out to gather the ball.

The referee maybe showing a bit of mercy in not giving the full-back a second yellow card. But it is a free kick on the edge of the box near the corner flag.

Inter stopper Martinez is closed down and he kicks the ball into touch, waking up the Feyenoord crowd. Can their side give them some hope in the next few minutes?

NASTY CLASH OF HEADS
Dumfries and Mitchell both launched themselves at Calhanoglu's deep dipping corner and had a paniful looking collision.

But Beelen clears the ball to safety. A third Inter goal looks more likely than a Feyenoord one.

Calhanoglu and Artanoutovic, two likely spot kick takers, both come on. Asslani and Martinez are withdrawn.

But a little off balance he couldn't direct the header on target.

It was a rash challenge on Dumfries though the Dutchman made a lot of it. That means the on-loan Brighton winger, whose night started so well, will not play in the second leg at the San Siro.

And deserved, he caught Mitchell around the knee.

The home fans applaud their former star as he comes off for Bisseck. Barella also comes off for Frattesi. It feels like Inzaghi feels the job is done.

He is cautioned for back chat to the referee. Possibly about the non penalty call.

Ueda runs at De Vrij who makes a good challenge and then as they both look to get the loose ball, the Feyenoord sub stumbles over the defender's body.

The former Napoli man Zielinski struck the penalty just inside Wellenreuther's right hand post but the keeper got all the way over to push it away.
