Paris Saint-Germain 0-1 Liverpool result: Harvey Elliott nets late to earn UEFA Champions League last-16 first-leg win

Harvey Elliott struck a late winner and Alisson produced a heroic goalkeeping display as Liverpool secured a resilient 1-0 win at Paris Saint-Germain to edge the first leg of their blockbuster UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.

Luis Enrique’s in-form Ligue 1 leaders lay siege to the visiting goal in a one-sided first half, with Alisson brilliantly denying Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, while the latter also had a sumptuous effort ruled out by VAR for offside.

Liverpool defended their penalty area with real resilience but needed Alisson to continue to make saves following the break, with the Brazilian shot-stopper tipping away substitute Desire Doue’s wonderful curler 10 minutes from time.

Arne Slot replaced Mo Salah with Elliott four minutes from the end and within seconds the substitute was the match-winner as he fired home Darwin Nunez’s fine pass.

Next up, PSG visit Rennes in Ligue 1 on Saturday. Liverpool host Southampton in the Premier League on the same day before welcoming Enrique’s men to Anfield for the second leg of this tie on Tuesday night, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Elliott: "It’s full credit to the team. The team’s work rate was incredible. PSG created many chances, but thanks to this man here (Alisson) and the defence we kept them out.

"Then it was down to me to put the opportunity away and, thankfully, it went in."

Asked if it was his best performance of the season, Alisson joked: "The best, probably of my life, so far anyway, hopefully.

"The manager was telling us how hard it would be, we had to be ready to suffer. We worked hard, but gave away so many chances. Then Harvey came on and scored the goal…"

Elliott on Alisson: "No words to be honest, this guy is unbelievable, the best in the world. Every game he shows it."

Rio Ferdinand: "It’s crazy. This is football, it throws up so many scenarios and results. But when you get a moment, you have got to take your moment.

"PSG will rue missed chances, but Alisson was the main man, making some great saves."

It’s a real smash-and-grab victory for Arne Slot’s side.

Slot then made a game-changing substitution, replacing superstar Salah with Elliott, who netted within seconds of taking to the field.

It puts Liverpool firmly in the driving seat heading into next week’s second leg at Anfield.
