Manchester United injury news and return dates ahead of Real Sociedad - Mainoo, Ugarte, Maguire
All the very latest on the Man United injury front ahead of tonight's Europa League clash with Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena in Spain.
Manchester United will be hoping to take a giant stride towards the Europa League quarter-finals when they face Real Sociedad in the first leg of their last-16 tie at the Reale Arena this evening.
United exited the FA Cup at the weekend, losing 4-3 to Fulham on penalties, and will be determined to get back on track as quickly as possible. The Europa League offers the club their only hope of salvaging something from this campaign.
Ahead of the clash in San Sebastian, United have been rocked by more bad news on the injury front, with Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte not included in their 18-man travelling squad.
With that said, here is all the latest on the injury front...
Altay Bayindir
Injury: unknown
Goalkeeper Bayindir has missed each of United's last five games with an unspecified injury that he sustained ahead of their FA Cup fourth round win over Leicester City last month, meaning he has not been included in a matchday squad since February 2.
Ahead of the draw with Everton last month, United head coach Ruben Amorim said the former Fenerbahce goalkeeper was "making a recovery", but he stopped short of offering a specific date on when he could return.
Possible return date: unknown.
Tom Heaton
Injury: unknown
Fellow shot-stopper Heaton has also been absent in recent weeks. In normal circumstances, he would have stepped up in Bayindir's absence and become Andre Onana's deputy.
Speaking almost a fortnight ago, Amorim said: "Tom is making a recovery. Again, I don't have a day, but they [Heaton and Bayindir] are recovering."
Possible return date: unknown.
Harry Maguire
Injury: unknown
Maguire was taken off before extra-time against Fulham at the weekend and was absent from the open training session United hosted at Carrington on Wednesday morning.
Amorim, addressing the media on Wednesday evening in Spain, suggested that Maguire's injury is not overly serious, but he did not offer any confirmation of when he could next be available for selection.
Possible return date: unknown.
Lisandro Martinez
Injury: anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
Martinez is a long-term absentee after rupturing his ACL in United's 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace last month. He underwent successful surgery a few weeks ago.
United have not put a specific timeframe on how long he will be out for, but he will not play again this season. ACL injuries usually take around six months to fully recover from.
Possible return date: August.
Jonny Evans
Injury: muscle
Evans has missed United's last 14 matches with a muscle issue he suffered back in December. He was last in the matchday squad when United lost 2-0 to Wolves on Boxing Day.
He last made an appearance when United lost 4-3 to Spurs in the Carabao Cup on December 19. It remains to be seen when he will next be available for selection.
Possible return date: unknown.
Luke Shaw
Injury: muscle
It is more than a year since Shaw last started a game for United, with his latest injury setback denying him any chances of forcing his way into Amorim's immediate plans. He has been sidelined since early-December with a muscle issue and he was making good progress with his recovery until recently.
He is continuing to work on an individual fitness programme, but it remains to be seen when he might be available to return.
Possible return date: unknown.
Manuel Ugarte
Injury: unknown
Like Maguire, Ugarte missed Wednesday's open training session and is not in the 18-man squad that has travelled to Spain.
Addressing his and Maguire's omissions from the squad, Amorim told reporters: "Small things [their injuries]. We are being careful because, in this moment, we cannot allow ourselves to lose more players for a long time.
"We are taking care of them in Carrington and they cannot play this game because it will be a greater risk."
Possible return date:
Kobbie Mainoo
Injury: unknown
Mainoo suffered an unspecified injury ahead of United's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last month and Amorim said he expected to be without the midfielder for "weeks".
There is confidence he will play again this season. It is possible he could return at some point in April.
Possible return date: April.
Toby Collyer
Injury: muscle
Collyer is in contention to return against Sociedad after being included in the 18-man squad that travelled to Spain. He has missed the last four matches with a muscle issue.
His inclusion in the travelling squad suggests he will be available to feature, most probably via the bench. He participated in the open training session United held at Carrington on Wednesday morning.
Possible return date: March 6 (Real Sociedad A).
Mason Mount
Injury: leg
Mount has been absent since being forced off in the first half of United's 2-1 victory over Manchester City on December 15. Amorim confirmed a few days later that Mount would be out for "several weeks".
He has been working hard on his recovery at Carrington in recent weeks and is understood to have made good progress. However, Amorim is yet to confirm when he could be back.
Possible return date: unknown.
Amad
Injury: ankle
United lost Amad to an ankle injury ahead of the defeat at Tottenham almost three weeks ago. A shining light this season, Amad is not expected to feature again this term.
Speaking ahead of the defeat at Spurs, Amorim said: "I think so, yes [he will miss the rest of the season]. I don't see it like that [the world being against us]. There are seasons when everything happens at the same time. Maybe we will find new ways to create situations."
Possible return date: pre-season.
