Stuart Pearce is in good spirits as he recovers in hospital after taking ill on a place.

The former Nottingham Forest defender was travelling to the United Kingdom from Las Vegas, before a medical incident forced his flight to divert to Canada. Pearce was in the United States to watch the historic Super League Las Vegas clash between Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves

The 62-year-old suffered chest pains on the flight and received treatment from crew chiefs, who hooked him up to a monitor before taking the decision to divert the plane. Pearce's recovery is now taking place in the city of St John's.

The ex-Team GB manager, who earned 78 caps for England, is said to be in good spirits for his recovery, though disappointed to miss a gig next week. Pearce's talkSPORT colleague, commentator Sam Matterface revealed he had spoken to the former England under-21s boss.

"I spoke to him yesterday, he was in great spirits," Matterface said. "He isn’t 100 per cent - that is definitely the case. But he’s in the right place in the hospital. They’re dealing with it.

"He’s a little bit disappointed about not being here today. He actually said to me, ‘I’ve got so much I’ve had to cancel. Great games and Mumford and Sons are playing next Wednesday night and I can’t go!’

"We send our best wishes to him, his partner, and all the family from everyone here at talkSPORT," added host Reshmin Choudhury. "We can't wait to have him back when he's ready."

Stuart Pearce in his role as a pundit for talkSPORT

Pearce works as a regular pundit for talkSPORT and Amazon Prime, covering the Premier League and Champions League. The ex-electrician's last game before his trip to watch the Super League saw him commentate for talkSPORT at Everton's 2-2 draw with Manchester United on February 22.

There was a special tribute to Pearce as Forest took on Manchester City - whom he managed between 2001 and 2002 - when the two played on Saturday lunchtime. The City Ground has a 'Get well soon' message on a large screen with both sets of supporters applauding in the third minute of play.

London-born Pearce, who was awarded on OBE in 1999 in appreciation of his footballing prowess and support for various charities, last worked in a coaching capacity at West Ham United. There he worked alongside David Moyes before choosing to depart the club in 2022 to pursue other interests.

Pearce last took on a management job in his own right at former club Nottingham Forest. 'Psycho' spent an eight-month stint at the City Ground that ended in February 2015.
