Jimmy Thelin recognises bruising Aberdeen factor at Hampden as boss only has one Scottish Cup target
Aberdeen will be going to Hampden again looking for a far different result in next month’s semi-final.
Jimmy Thelin has urged his side to show some Hampden redemption by going all the way for Scottish Cup glory.
The Dons head back to the national for the first time since their sobering 6-0 Premier Sports Cup hammering against Celtic back in November. Aberdeen will be going to Hampden again looking for a far different result in next month’s semi-final. They join Hearts in Monday’s draw.
Thelin said: “We were there last time and it wasn’t such a good result. When you go to the semi-final then the target is always the final. Now, we have to focus on the league but it is nice to have it in the future , to look forward to it.
“It is going to be a big game and we’ll see against who.
“Now, all the focus has to be on the net league game because it is so tight in the table.
“When we are there (Hampden) we need to try and win to reach the final.”
Thelin was pleased with the way his team eased past Queen’s Park, 4-1, yesterday. It is Aberdeen's fourth successive semi-final appearance. It is also 35 years since they last lifted the trophy.
He added: “It’s good to have it there in the future to look forward to, and it's going to be a big game.
Everybody wants to be in Hamden and fight for a final spot and try to win something, so that's the first part.
It's good also, the last time we played against Queen’s Park it was 1-0 in the last minute, top of the score, I think. We never knew before this game, so I'm happy that we can score the goals and be quite stable today and deserve a semi-final spot, and let's see then.
He revealed midfielder Sivert Nilsen missed the game with an eye injury suffered in training.
Thelin added: “I hope he's fine, but he got a small hit on the eye in training, so he wasn't allowed to play today.
“So hopefully he's fine during the week, but let's see.”
