Bochum stun leaders Bayern Munich with remarkable comeback win
Relegation-threatened Bochum staged an incredible comeback from 2-0 down to beat 10-man Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich 2-3 Bochum
Goals: 1-0 Guerreiro 14’ (assist: Gnabry), 2-0 Guerreiro 28’ (assist: Müller), 2-1 Medić, 2-2 Sissoko 51’ (assist: Passlack), 2-3 Bero 71’ (assist: Hofmann)
Red card: Palhinha 43’
The Allianz Arena was awash with red and white at kick-off as fans created a spectacular tifo to mark Bayern's 125th anniversary. Raphaël Guerreiro duly kick-started the party when he broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, rifling home a loose ball from inside the Bochum box. He then doubled the lead in the 28th minute, heading in from Thomas Müller, but not before Gnabry had struck the upright from the penalty spot.
Turning point
However, the match took a dramatic turn soon after. Medić pulled a goal back in the 31st minute, giving the visitors a lifeline, before João Palhinha was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Georgios Masouras, leaving Bayern to play the entire second half with 10 men.
Bochum's brilliant comeback
Bochum seized their opportunity after the restart. Ibrahima Sissoko equalised in the 51st minute with a well-placed header, capitalising on Bayern's numerical disadvantage. The comeback was complete in the 71st minute when Matúš Bero fired home to give Bochum a shock 3-2 lead, sending the away fans into delirium. Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany responded by bringing on reinforcements like Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala, but Bochum defending resolutely and might have added a fourth had Bundesliga debut Jonas Urbig not thwarted Giorgos Masouras one-on-one.
Timo Horn pulled off a brilliant save of his own in the dying minutes, denying Musiala's point-blank header, as Bayern fell to only their second league loss of the season. The only saving grace was that second-placed Bayer Leverkusen went down 2-0 to Werder Bremen, leaving the gap at the top at eight points. Bochum, meanwhile, now have a three-point cushion on the automatic relegation zone.
Player of the Match: Raphaël Guerreiro
Despite ending up on the losing side, Guerreiro's performance stood out. The Portuguese midfielder scored both of Bayern's goals, showcasing his attacking prowess and ability to find space in the box. His first goal demonstrated quick thinking and excellent technique, while his second highlighted his aerial ability. Guerreiro's brace should have set Bayern on the path to victory, and he continued to be a threat even after his team went down to 10 men. His efforts earned him the highest fantasy manager points (495) of any player in the match, underlining his significant impact despite the final result.
