7 Rangers vs Fenerbahce ref calls that test Jose Mourinho conspiracy theory from Raskin penalty 'let off' to Jefte sin

The legendary boss fumed at the full-time whistle as he insists Fener had been denied three penalties at Ibrox

There were wild scenes as Rangers saw off Fenerbahce to reach the Europa League quarter-finals – and not just in the home stands.

Barry Ferguson's men came into the game with a two-goal advantage - but a double from Sebastian Szymanski cancelled out the Light Blues' advantage before the Scottish Premiership side claimed victory on spot-kicks.

But that was from the end of the drama as Jose Mourinho was in explosive form when he faced the media, insisting that referee Espen Eskas had failed to dish out THREE penalties to his side at Ibrox.

He also questioned the standard of VAR with Pol van Boekel leading the team - before The Special One raised fears Fenerbahce are paying for his own indiscretions in the aftermath of the bitter row which erupted after Roma lost the 2023 Europa League Final to Sevilla in Bucharest.

Mourinho was banned for four games by UEFA after a foul-mouthed tirade at referee Anthony Taylor in a Budapest car park following his side's defeat.

So, did the match officials get the big calls right under the Ibrox lights? Record Sport takes a look.

Talisca 'penalty' snub

Fenerbahce thought they had a penalty in the first half - but would see their own man booked instead.

Anderson Talisca went down under pressure by Jefte on the 18-yard line - but it would be Rangers who were left off by the referee Eskas.

Instead, he would show a yellow card to the Brazilian forward - with Jose Mourinho and the visiting bench loudly protesting the decision before a member of the coaching team also went into the book.

Ally McCoist on TNT Sports commentary admitted: "That is interesting. I will get my cards on the table right now, I thought he caught him. I think Rangers got away with one there. Put this way, I would have been looking for that."

Andy Halliday told BBC Sportsound: "I think all of our reactions was it was a free-kick at very, very least and that Jefte would be the one who was booked. I think the question is was it inside or outside the box, and of course because it was outside the box it was a booking for Anderson Talisca."

Leon Balogun 'handball'

Jose Mourinho was quick to turn to the fourth official in protest - but the refereeing team weren't having this one.

A long ball forward found the head of Youssef En-Nesyri - who attempted to cut the ball back to a Fenerbahce teammate as the ball made contact with Balogun on the edge of the box.

The Moroccan frontman threw up claims for a handball from the Rangers centre-back - but the whistler and the VAR team were unmoved. Steven Thompson on BBC Sportsound pointed out: "Jose Mourinho is asking for a penalty."

Halliday shut down the conversation: "That is extremely ambitious. He has headed it off Balogun's arm about a yard away."

Cyriel Dessers 'penalty' snub

A Rangers corner would be worked back into the box by the head of Balogun - with Milan Skriniar attempting to get to the ball ahead of Cyriel Dessers.

The striker attempted a fresh-air swipe in the six-yard box before crumbling to the ground and claiming for a spot-kick. Eskas wasn't having it and waved play on - with VAR opting against intervening.

McCoist wasn't impressed by the claim: "There is very little in it, bordering on nothing in it."

Former Rangers man Thompson chimed in: "No, never. This is the thing with Dessers - sometimes he goes down in the box awfully easy looking for these things with the slightest wee touch on him. Definitely not a penalty kick."

Ridvan Yilmaz 'handball'

As Fener pushed for an equaliser on the night, Filip Kostic tried his luck from the right flank.

Substitute Ridvan Yilmaz was quick to close down the drive at Jack Butland's goal - but the ball appeared to strike the Light Blues' man on the arm.

There was loud protests from the away team - including The Special One - but his arm was judged to not be in an unnatural position.

Halliday clamped the call: "Not for me. I don't think he makes his arms unnaturally bigger, they are by his sides."

Thompson added: "I wonder if VAR will have a wee look at that. It did hit Yilmaz. No, they will have quickly dismissed that."

Yusuf Akcicek 'handball' claim

Rangers were on the back foot with Fener now level in the tie - and leading 2-0 on the night.

However, Vaclav Cerny looked to unlock the visiting backline on the counter attack as he cut in from the right flank and cut the ball across the box.

Yusuf Akcicek would block the shot from reaching a Rangers man with loud protests ringing out at Ibrox - but the ball appeared to cannon off his arm before being cleared.

It was by his side at the time, and IFAB rules explain that a handball is award if the ball "touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised."

After VAR opted against intervening to award a penalty, the off-field officials appeared to judge the arm was by his sides.

Ianis Hagi 'penalty' snub

Alexander Djiku played a risky game in extra time as he took out Ianis Hagi on the edge of the box.

The Romanian playmaker argued that a penalty should be awarded - with the man in the middle opting to go with a free-kick with the call just on the edge of the box.

The Rangers man earned a booking for his protests, with McCoist conceding: 'He is a lucky boy. His momentum takes him towards the box. I think he just stops outside the box."

Nicolas Raskin 'penalty' fury

The Rangers midfielder piled the pressure on Mert Hakan Yandas on the edge of the box - before the Fenerbahce man tumbled under pressure.

Mourinho and his men fumed - with the legendary boss going into the book for his touchline protest that teed up his full-time penalty rant.

There were gestures from players and the boss for the whistler to go to VAR - McCoist wasn't having any of it instantly on TNT Sports: "Nah, I don't think it is. He is diving. We can have a look at it if you want, Jose, but he is diving."

But Thompson wasn't convinced the officials had got it right: "He has caught his leg. You have seen these types of contacts given. That is a let off."
