Scott Tiffoney demands Dundee show rather than tell as he makes relegation scrap admission

The wide man concedes that the Dens squad aren't relaxed about their league position ahead of Dundee Utd derby meeting

Scott Tiffoney

Scott Tiffoney knows the good thing for Dundee is that form goes out the window when it comes to the derby.

It is just as well because the Dark Blues have failed to win in their last five matches in all competitions. Tony Docherty’s side are just three points from the foot of the Premiership table and are in desperate need of a win when they cross the road to take on Dundee United on Sunday.

Dundee do go into the game knowing they have the bragging rights, when last time they knocked their rivals out of the cup. Tiffoney claimed: “Leading up to the derby, the mood's positive because we know obviously in the derby games that form goes out the window. It's two teams going at it and we fancy ourselves for the win.

“These are the games we look forward to, it's the first game you probably look to when the fixtures come out at the very start. So we're all looking forward to it and we know what a win would do for us, it would be massive.

“Any win in the Dundee derby is massive for any side of the team, so we know if we win this game at the weekend then it kicks us on for the rest of the season.”

Dundee’s last derby win saw them end a 69 year wait to beat United in the cup. Tiffoney knows what it means to the blue side of the city to get the upper hand. The attacker said: “That night was obviously the first time we'd beat United in the cup in so many years.

“We all know what it means to people in Dundee. The two clubs are right beside each other. Every Dundee fan knows a Dundee United fan so we know what it takes.

“It's actually a good game to play in, I think a lot of people enjoy watching a Dundee derby more to be honest and obviously to the city of Dundee it means a lot.”

The recent slide and Premiership table doesn’t make good reading for anybody at Dens Park. The positive thing is that they still have nine games to dig themselves out of danger.

Tiffoney stated: “Obviously we're not relaxed about the situation, we know we can do better as a squad, so we're going into the game Sunday just confident.

“Yes, like anyone at the moment will set us up for going into the split definitely and that's all we're looking at. We're just taking it game by game and you know what a Dundee derby win can do for you It can turn your season around.”

Dundee’s results haven’t been great but it has been more lapses of concentration that has cost them more than anything. Tiffoney knows it is time for him and his teammates to put it all together: “We need a full 90 minute performance and we know we have that in us,” the Dundee star acknowledged.

“We just need to go out and show that now, it's enough time for talk, it's more for us to show it now.”

It is a big spell for Dundee and a lot of players, including Tiffoney. The 26-year-old is out-of-contract at the end of the season. Dundee have offered an extension but nothing has been agreed yet.

He confirmed: “No, it's still ongoing with the club at the moment so we'll just see what happens. You never know what can happen in football, you never know what's around the corner.

“So I quite like to make my decision later on when you know what's happening.

“Right now the contract situation isn't on my mind at all, I'm just looking to win football matches for Dundee."
