Diogo Jota has made a "disappointing" admission after Liverpool's defeat to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.

The Reds were beaten 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon as they missed out on winning their first major trophy of the season.

Arne Slot's side were given hope of overturning a two-goal deficit after Federico Chiesa scored in stoppage time.

However, the strike proved to be a consolation goal for Liverpool, as the Reds go into the March international break on the back of a disappointing defeat.

Jota was named in the starting line-up by Slot, and missed an opportunity to equalise for Liverpool moments before the half-time whistle.

The Portugal international was eventually replaced by Darwin Nunez early in the second half, and is now without a goal across his last ten appearances in all competitions.

Hours after the defeat at Wembley, Jota took to social media to issue an emotional message to Liverpool fans.

The Reds' No.20 outlined the team will remain focused on the Premier League title race after the international break.

"Not good enough today," Jota wrote on X, formerly known as X. "A very disappointing week for everyone that supports [Liverpool]. We will be back soon to fight for the league."

Liverpool will return to action on April 2 when they host Everton at Anfield in the Premier League.

That will be the first of their final nine league matches as they aim to win the 20th title in the club's history.

Arsenal's win over Chelsea on Sunday saw Liverpool's lead at the top of the Premier League table reduced to 12 points.
