Andy Robertson confirms international retirement stance after Sir Kenny Dalglish Liverpool chat

Andy Robertson is set to be in action for Scotland against Greece tonight

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has given no consideration about retiring from international football and is instead chasing Sir Kenny Dalglish's Scotland appearance record. Robertson, 31, will move into third in the all-time men's list should he make his 81st appearance during Scotland's trip to Greece in the first leg of their Nations League play-off on Thursday.

No one has even come close to Dalglish's appearance record, but Robertson is eyeing up that feat, having spoken to the Liverpool legend about it the "other week". Should Robertson break Dalglish's record, he would need to make another 23 appearances.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, Robertson said: "I actually said to Kenny the other week, 'I'm coming for you'. His reply was plenty of players have said that before and he's still the main man."

Robertson's first Scotland appearance came under Gordon Strachan in 2014, and he first led the team out as captain by Alex McLeish four years later. He has since established himself as one of Scotland's greatest-ever players, featuring in almost every single game when available.

"I love playing for Scotland, showing up for every camp, and I want to get as many caps as I can," Robertson said. "Wherever that takes me, it takes me. I'm incredibly proud to get to 80.

"You just deal with what's in front of you. There's so much going on, you can't look too far ahead. You need a bit of luck with injuries but I do everything I can to make sure I'm in the best possible shape for Liverpool and Scotland."

Scotland face Greece in a two-legged play-off, looking to remain in the Nations League top tier after finishing third in their group behind Portugal and Croatia. They ended up on seven points from their six matches, having scored a 93rd-minute winner to beat Poland in their final group outing.

"The Nations League has been important for us and the aim was always to get to Group A," said Robertson. "We then saw the rewards when we held our own against Portugal and Croatia.

"There was a lot of negativity after the Euros and rightly so. We believed we could get out of the group and we didn't perform to the levels we know we can. There was a lot of talk around 'is this the end for this squad?' But I think we have bounced back really well."
