England manager Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Anthony Gordon may have suffered a serious injury during his substitute cameo against Albania on Friday night. Tuchel introduced the Newcastle United winger in the 74th minute at Wembley, replacing Marcus Rashford on the left wing, as England cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win in his first match as boss.

However, Gordon had barely got involved when a crunching challenge left him grounded and clearly in pain as he clutched his hip with a bitter look on his face. The 24-year-old attempted to battle on before collapsing to the ground in agony in the latter stages of the victory, which started the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in style. Gordon was receiving treatment as the final whistle blew in the capital and required support from two members of England's medical staff to get back to his feet.

He sheepishly hobbled down the Wembley tunnel at full-time while his team-mates and Tuchel acknowledged the supporters.

The German coach later claimed that the early signs weren't promising, handing Newcastle and Eddie Howe a significant concern.

"He looks injured. First of all, I thought it was his stomach, but no, it is his hip. Unfortunately, it does not look good," Tuchel explained.

Gordon's injury likely rules him out of Monday's second World Cup qualifier against Latvia and could force a spell on the sidelines at the start of Newcastle's run-in.

He has missed the Magpies' last two matches after picking up a straight red card in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Howe hasn't been hampered by Gordon's absence yet, overseeing a 1-0 win at West Ham United before ending Newcastle's 70-year wait for silverware by beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

The lightning-quick forward was also ruled out of the Premier League clash against Brentford on April 2, the final match of his suspension.

However, Gordon's unavailability may extend beyond that if his injury is as serious as Tuchel's comments suggest.

Despite becoming the latest England manager to enjoy a victorious start, Tuchel demanded improvement from his players after full-time.

He said: "We can do better, we have to do better. We started well. We had seven or eight minutes with 100 per cent ball possession, a lot of passes, and high energy.

"The opponent is hard to break down as they defend in a deep block. In the Euros, they managed to not concede chances.

"Second half, I felt we were too slow and, in general, not enough runs off the ball to get behind the line."
