Kasper Schmeichel left with 'arm in a sling' as Celtic keeper sees 3 conflicting injury hints emerge
Schmeichel hurt his shoulder in action for Denmark and Celtic are awaiting the results of a scan
Kasper Schmeichel was spotted at the airport with his arm in a sling according to reports in Denmark, as Celtic face an anxious wait to discover the extent of his injury.
The shotstopper captained his country against Portugal in the Nations League last night and went down clutching his left shoulder after a collision with Diogo Jota.
He'd already saved a spot-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo, and while Denmark wanted to substitute him, they had used all their changes and Schmeichel had to finish the game.
Portugal eventually won 5-2 on the night (5-3 on aggregate) after extra-time and Schmeichel was assessed by doctors and sent for a scan, the results of which will determine how long he will miss.
In the meantime, Tipsbladet report that he was spotted at the airport in Copenhagen with his left arm strapped up in a sling. It's claimed that he 'did not look good' and 'may now face a longer injury break' than first feared.
That conflicts with an update from Danish team doctor Morten Boesen who said on Monday morning: "Kasper Schmeichel's left shoulder was X-rayed last night and fortunately the images do not show anything abnormal.
"He is clearly in pain after a fall on his shoulder, so we are examining him further with an MRI scan."
And that came after boss Brian Riemer gave an instant assessment of the injury in the hours after the game. He said: "If it had been possible, I would have replaced Kasper Schmeichel because he was injured, but we had already made all our substitutions.
"We talked about Kasper Schmeichel going out, but he didn't want to go out himself. As long as he could stand in goal, it was an advantage for us to have 11 players on the field.
"The alternative was that we only had nine outfield players if we had to put a man off the field and on goal."
Celtic will be hoping it's all a false alarm with a big four-game run on the horizon before the split. They return to action to face Hearts on Saturday.
