Rangers warned against 'foolish' next manager move as 2 Barry Ferguson alternatives named
The former Ibrox skipper has booked a Europa League quarter-final with Athletic Bilbao and defeated Celtic in their own backyard
Rangers have been warned that it would be FOOLISH not to give Barry Ferguson the job for keeps.
The former Ibrox skipper has taken on the top job on an interim basis until the summer after the club sacked Belgian boss Philippe Clement.
The ex-Light Blues midfielder got the better of Jose Mourinho in the Europa League over two legs with Rangers dumping out Fenerbahce on penalties after a 3-3 draw on aggregate that included a 3-1 win on the road at the Turkish giants. That triumph has booked a quarter-final shot at La Liga high-flyers Athletic Bilbao
Just days after the home fixture, Ferguson and his backroom team including Allan McGregor, Billy Dodds and Neil McCann masterminded a derby day win over Celtic in their own backyard and make it back to back defeats in the fixture for Brendan Rodgers.
Those two results stand out for Don Goodman, and the Sky Sports pundit insists Rangers would be daft not to give Ferguson a run at the job in the summer.
But he has also named Russell Martin and Steve Cooper as two alternative options and claimed both would do a really good job in Scotland. However, he believes it is Fergie's job or nobody's at this moment in time.
He told Grosvenor Sport: "As things stand, given what Barry Ferguson is doing, it would be foolish not to give him the job.
"I, absolutely, think the likes of Russell Martin and Steve Cooper could go up to Rangers and do a really good job, but we're talking hypothetically.
"They are two managers who have done really well in the Championship, while Steve Cooper has pedigree of keeping a newly promoted side in the Premier League.
"Either of those two would do a brilliant job in Glasgow but I do think Rangers would be daft not to give Barry Ferguson a run at it, given his achievements in the Europa League and the way they won at Celtic Park.
"If I'm honest, I can't imagine Rangers are going to be looking for anybody else."
