Paul Gascoigne endorses his next Rangers manager choice as Barry Ferguson bigged up and his guilty secret’s revealed
The Ibrox hero has had his say on who should step into the hot seat at the end of the Premiership campaign
Ibrox icon Paul Gascoigne has thrown his weight behind Barry Ferguson landing the top job at Rangers.
Ferguson has stepped into the role on an interim basis after the disastrous end of Philippe Clement's tenure in the dugout.
He boosted his chances of landing the job permanently by seeing off Fenerbahce to reach the Europa League quarter-final before beating Celtic on their own turf ahead of the international break.
The triumphs came in front of American tycoon Andrew Cavenagh – who is the driving force behind the Rangers takeover – alongside 49ers Enterprises.
But despite bolstering his CV, big names have been floated to fill the vacancy permanently at the end of the current Scottish Premiership campaign. Steven Gerrard, Rafa Benitez, Russell Martin and Kevin Muscat have all been put forward as contenders to land the title when the takeover is rubber stamped.
But Gazza reckons there is only one man for the job as he bizarrely revealed the former skipper has previously asked him "for the end of a cigarette".
Speaking to PokerScout, the Ibrox icon said: “It was a good win for Rangers against Celtic, and it was good for the manager Barry Ferguson. I remember him asking me for the end of a cigarette once.
"He’s a great guy and he should get the job permanently 'cause he is Rangers through and through and he’s got potential to be a great manager at Ibrox. Good luck to him because I like Barry, he's a good guy.”
Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho is another name who has been mentioned with a blockbuster move to Ibrox at the end of the campaign. And Gascoigne revealed that 'The Special One' told him that he would have loved to have been his manager.
He said: “I met Jose once at a Chelsea vs Everton game. I went to watch the game and he said, 'I wish I’d have signed you, I would’ve loved to have been your manager'.
"He’s a great guy and some manager, considering he started as a translator. He’s achieved so much.”
