Glenn Hoddle has heaped praise on Morgan Rogers after the Aston Villa youngster made his full England debut against Latvia.

Rogers played the full 90 minutes in a 3-0 win as the World Cup qualification campaign got off to a good start and new boss Thomas Tuchel learned more about his new players.

His Three Lions predecessor Hoddle, who steered England to the last 16 in the 1998 tournament in France, heaped praise on a player who is enjoying an outstanding campaign.

He told talkSPORT: “You want to find out about somebody on the pitch, all the hype, you've had a look at him in training, can he reproduce it?

“He went out there and his first bit of skill when he went out towards the corner flag and he did what I call a Rivelinho back in the day.

"He used to hit the top of the ball and he spun round the guy and I don't think anyone saw actually what he did, but he got on the back of him on the byeline and cut it back and I think it went for a corner.

“I thought ‘My word, if that's the first thing you're going to do as a player...’ and he was wonderful. I thought he was excellent.

“He's just got that little bit of guile about him, that turn of pace, and my word for his age he's got that body strength, possibly like a Rooney when he was really young.

"He won't get knocked off the ball and he's a confident lad and he believes in his own ability.”

Tuchel was more measured in his assessment of the 22-year-old, saying: “[I am] Happy with him in general. He deserved to start as he trained well and plays very well for Villa.

"I think in a match where we are so dominant, it can suit him more to play from the wing.

“Once we moved him out wide, he seemed more comfortable with his first touches and was able to make more dynamic movements.

"There was more space there than in the half-space. I’m learning about the players and the games – and that's good."
