Alphonso Davies is set to miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee while on international duty with Canada.
The 24-year-old limped off after 12 minutes of Canada’s 2-1 win over the United States in the Concacaf Nations League third-place match.
And Bayern Munich have now confirmed Davies will require surgery and be out for "several months" in what will be a huge blow to the German club ahead of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
"Unfortunately, there's always the risk of players returning from international breaks with injuries - this time we've been hit particularly hard," Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl said.
"Phonzy [Davies] will get all the support he needs on his road to recovery. We have a strong squad and will compensate for these absences. We'll now grow even closer together. The quality is there to continue pursuing our big goals."
Bayern will also be without Dayot Upamecano "for the coming weeks" after the 26-year-old picked up a knock during France’s penalty shootout win over Croatia to reach the semi-finals of the Nations League.
Davies, who has just signed a new deal to keep him at Bayern until June 2030, had not long returned from a hamstring injury before suffering this latest setback.
The first-choice left-back forms a pivotal part of Bayern’s attack, so his loss will be keenly felt by manager Vincent Kompany.
Bayern are well clear at the top of the Bundesliga but will be eager to claim a first Champions League title since the 2019/20 season.
After thumping Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 on aggregate in the last 16, they take on Inter Milan in the quarter-finals, with the first leg at home on April 8 live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
