Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel will miss "a few weeks" as a minimum after picking up a shoulder injury on international duty.

That is according to Brian Riemer, after the Denmark boss revealed the 38-year-old goalkeeper's reaction to the knock in the wake of defeat to Portugal.

The shot-stopper captained his country against in the Nations League clash on Monday and went down clutching his left shoulder after a collision with Diogo Jota.

He'd already saved a spot-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo - but had to see out the 90 minutes as Riemer had already used all of his substitutes.

But the former Anderlecht boss insists that the veteran No. 1 still told him the game was among his "proudest days."

On he injury woes going into the Hoops' clash with Hearts on Saturday, he told Ekstra Bladet “Now he is injured, but whether he will be out for a few weeks or longer, we don’t know yet, but he requires attention.

“The positive thing is that examinations have shown that it isn’t a fracture and something that is career-threatening.”

Viljami Sinisalo and Scott Bain are the options between the sticks for Brendan Rodgers as the Scottish Premiership emerges from cold storage this weekend.

But Schmeichel is now a major doubt for the Scottish Cup semi-final showdown with St Johnstone - as Celtic look to take another stride towards a Treble at Hampden.

But after speaking to the goalkeeper, Riemer insists he has no regrets over keeping him on the pitch for the full 90 minutes against Portugal.

The defiant boss explained: “I never considered replacing Kasper, so we would have to finish with 10 men.

"We were chasing a goal, and one shot by Kasper Schmeichel is still better than Rasmus Kristensen (right-back) in goal.

“Kasper could still play with his feet. I have spoken to Kasper. We spoke on Tuesday. He has told me that it was one of his proudest days, because he was captain of Denmark.”
