Alfredo Morelos learns Atletico Nacional punishment after Rangers goal hero sees red mist descend over 'fat' taunt
The former Ibrox goal hero saw red for the ninth time during his professional career last weekend
Alfredo Morelos has been whacked with a two-game ban and ordered to pay nearly half a million pound in fines after an off-the-ball incident saw the former Rangers star shown the ninth red card of his professional career last Sunday.
In Atletico Nacional's heated derby clash with Independiente Medellin - where Morelos started his professional career back in 2014 - last weekend, the Colombia international was given his marching orders in injury time after lashing out at opposition goalkeeper Washington Aguerre who had allegedly made fun about the striker's weight during the 1-1 draw.
The 28-year-old's dismissal was the first time he had been sent off since seeing red for Gers in a Premiership match with Hibs at Easter Road in 2022.
Morelos' had previously knocked up five red cards in a single season during his time at Ibrox in the 2018/19 season, including a infamous spat with Aberdeen's Scott McKenna off the ball at Pittodrie that resulted in both players being sent down the tunnel.
And following his latest red card, the forward has now been told that he will serve a two-game suspension and will also have to pay a total of $616,850 (£476.711) in fines.
The frontman will miss league clashes against Atletico Bucaramanga and Union Magdalena, with his team currently sitting top of the league table on goal difference after 10 matches.
Morelos' manager Javier Gandolfi hit out at the players' antics in the wake of the game. He said: "Although Alfredo was clearly provoked, he has to show more respect on the pitch and behave himself.
"Both sets of players should have behaved better, actually."
However, the former Ibrox goal machine's teammate at Nacional, Juan Zapata, launched a staunch defence of Morelos.
He added: "This is a guy who doesn't know what the derby means here and seemed to want to take centre stage by making gestures at Alfredo.
"He had no business making those signs."
