Manchester United's recent defeat to Nottingham Forest has set alarm bells ringing once again. The Red Devils - who had been enjoying a decent run of form before the international break - suffered their third consecutive Premier League loss against Nuno Espirito Santo's team as Anthony Elanga came back to haunt his old club.

The result was a stark reminder of the issues that have frustrated United fans in recent years: a porous defence, lacklustre attack, and misplaced energy. Bruno Fernandes' outburst at Forest captain Ryan Yates is an example of the kind of drama the United skipper can't help but get involved in. Persistent rumours linking Fernandes with a move away from Old Trafford don't help matters, and several big clubs are reportedly interested. Express Sport (via The Mirror) takes a closer look at the playmaker's current predicament as his United struggles continue, with a former coach at the club predicting a bright future elsewhere.

Ryan Yates scrap

In a match where everything seemed to fall into place for Forest, captain Yates perfectly embodied the idea that luck is often self-made. He ended the game with two fouls to his name - though that tally could certainly have been higher - and assisted Elanga's decisive goal.

Yates executed his strategy of man-marking Fernandes brilliantly, getting under the skin of his opponent as he has done so many times this season. This was most evident when he dramatically reacted to Fernandes' hand flick, rolling on the ground as if hit by a punch.

Referee Jarred Gillett appeared to conclude Yates was overreacting, but it was another indication of Fernandes' unsettled mindset, giving the opposition exactly what they wanted. United, who could drop to 15th this week, have historically boasted a roster of fiery players who push the boundaries of the rules.

However, this aggression was always paired with a certain arrogance, a confidence that came from knowing they were the 'big team' in any contest. The dynamic at Old Trafford has taken a turn for the worse, however, and where Fernandes should be the one leading by example, Wednesday was a reminder he's often the first to let his emotions get the better of him.

United loyalty tested

Despite some rocky patches, Fernandes has proved his dedication to United repeatedly in recent years. It would, however, be naïve to think such loyalty has no end.

In an act that speaks volumes, the ex-Sporting CP playmaker has remained by Ruben Amorim's side without expressing any desire to depart. He fortified his commitment to the club by inking a new deal last summer that keeps him at The Theatre of Dreams until 2027.

Fernandes shared his sentiments last summer after signing a fresh deal: "Everybody knows the passion I have for Manchester United. I understand the responsibility and significance of wearing this shirt, and the levels of dedication and desire required to represent this incredible club.

"I have had so many special moments here already: hearing my name sung from the Stretford End, scoring a hat-trick against Leeds, leading the team out at Old Trafford on European nights and lifting trophies at Wembley. But I wouldn't have signed this contract if I didn't believe that my best moments in a United shirt are still to come."

With a little more than two years left on his contract, United have some leverage in retaining their gem. However, after a dismal Premier League campaign, the club faces the danger that he might lose faith in the project.

Real Madrid plot

As whispers of Real Madrid's interest grow louder, it appears only Europe's crème de la crème could tempt or compel United to part with their captain. While Barcelona has been previously linked to Fernandes, it's their arch-rivals who are currently sparking speculation, with a potential £90million bid being mentioned.

Such a sum might be too tempting for United to ignore for the 30-year-old maestro. And Rene Meulensteen, a former first-team coach at United, has expressed his belief that if Fernandes were to make the switch to Los Blancos, they would be nearly invincible.

"I think people sometimes question the way Bruno Fernandes likes to get his feelings across," he told Poker Firma. "But one thing for me is certain - he's an absolute winner. He plays all the games, he's never injured, and he's very committed to Manchester United and wants the best for the club.

"Every footballer has ambitions. I'm sure he wants to win trophies for Man United, but if a team like Real Madrid were to come knocking for him in the summer, he would fit like a glove there.

"Luka Modric is turning 40 soon and Madrid need someone in midfield with that kind of passing range who can supply Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe. With Bruno Fernandes' passing range, Real Madrid would be unbelievable, and their forward line would become even better!"
