Rangers managerial 'dream ticket' proposed by ex Ibrox man as Tom Lawrence gets brutal transfer verdict

Barry Ferguson is in caretaker charge but the Ibrox side are on the hunt for a permanent boss

Billy Davies proposed of a Rangers managerial “dream ticket” of him as No. 2 to Sam Allardyce.

Davies spoke to the veteran ex-England boss on his Footy Accumulators' No Tippy Tippy Football podcast and floated the idea of the pair getting together at Ibrox.

The ex Motherwell, Preston, Derby and Notting Forest boss was overlooked for the Rangers job when Pedro Caixinha was appointed in 2017.

But with the Light Blues, who Davies played for five years at the start of his playing career, on the hunt for a permanent boss Davies said: "I'm gonna tell you that the best management team, in my opinion, for Rangers is Sam Allardyce, manager and Billy Davies assistant. That’s a dream ticket!”

Vastly experienced Allardyce has been out of work since a short stint in charge of Leeds Untied a couple of years ago and the 70-year-old said in an interview earlier this year of the prospect of returning to management: “Only if someone called and said, ‘Sam, would you be interested in helping us and developing us in the right direction?'

“I would see where it went from there. In terms of actively, I don’t ring up and ask for every job that comes available. If someone is willing to take on an old experienced guy like me now, then you never know.”

Meanwhile, Don Goodman - who played under Davies at Motherwell - scoffed at talk of Rangers fringe man Tom Lawrence joining title-chasing Burnley - and reckons joining his old Ibrox team-mate Todd Cantwell at Blackburn Rovers would be more logical.

Lawrence was linked with Wrexham this week and has also been touted for a move to a host of clubs at the top end of the English Championship.

But ex Wolves striker Goodman doesn’t see a move to Turf Moor. He told Football League World: "A move to Blackburn Rovers? I would say it is more of an appropriate move than to Burnley, going to Blackburn.

”He's been at Rangers for coming up to three seasons [and] it hasn't gone as well as I feel Tom or Rangers will have wanted.

"He's really struggled for game time certainly since the beginning of the year.

"What would he add to Burnley at 31, other than experience? They've probably got enough of that already. It's not really a move that, with respect, would make a lot of sense to me."
