Willie Haughey fury at Queen's Park over derogatory pub quiz names as seething owner unloads during Spiders exit speech
The 68-year-old confirmed Record Sport's story earlier this week that he was pulling out of the historic Glasgow outfit
Livid Lord Willie Haughey was left raging after Queen’s Park fans used his name for derogatory pub quiz team names.
Record Sport can reveal the wealthy Scottish businessman brought up the episode as he informed the Spiders he was withdrawing his funding of the Championship club.
Haughey was furious that committee members had been present at the pub quiz, which took place at the bar attached to the club’s Lesser Hampden Ground, and failed to act.
An eyewitness at the event which took place shortly after Queen’s Park were thrashed 4-0 at home to Falkirk - and proved the final straw for Callum Davidson with the axe falling after the final whistle - confirmed to Record Sport that offensive team names had been used.
The names were ‘Haughey Out’, ‘Nepotism FC’ and the most offensive of all - 'Big Fan ae Haughey'.
And a source close to a Queen’s Park committee member at the meeting in which Haughey informed the club he was pulling out said: “He was far from happy and while I don’t think it was the sole reason he has has withdrawn from the club, there is no doubt it didn’t help. He has put a lot of money into the club and probably felt he wasn’t being fully appreciated.”
Record Sport broke the story that Haughey was pulling out and told how Haughey has grown increasingly frustrated by the bureaucracy at the top of the Championship.
The 68-year-old - knighted in 2012 and made a life peer in 2013 - later confirmed it and said: “My sponsorship of Queen’s Park will come to an end in June, 2026, when the current five-year agreement is due to finish.
“That gives the club 14-months to adjust and prepare. I am also wanting to make it clear that when I do leave, Queen’s Park won’t have a penny of debt.
“It’s been a long time and I wanted to be fair and give them plenty of notice so they could cut their cloth accordingly. It gives them 18 months to go back to operating under the basis that Queen’s park can survive and get on with things.
“I’ve seen some stuff about them going into administration or going bust but I can assure everyone when our sponsorship ends they won’t have a penny of debt. We will honour everything we have signed up for and they’ve got a long time to readjust.
“They might get another sponsor. They’ve lasted for over 150 years so the people who run the club know how to run the club so I wanted to dispel that myth.
“They’ll continue in the professional ranks and I’m sure they will have a strong presence in Scottish football, whatever division they are in. They will go from strength to strength.”
Lord Haughey has not responded to Record Sport's request for comment.
