Brentford manager Thomas Frank has aimed a thinly-veiled dig at Chelsea and their spending in recent transfer windows following the 0-0 draw in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
The Blues had to settle for a point from the game, despite having more shots and shots on target than their opponents. Cole Palmer had a chance to take all three points in added time but his shot flew just over the bar.
After the game, Frank gave his assessment of the match, and Chelsea under Enzo Maresca. He also pointed to the Blues’ activity in the transfer window.
“We are all slightly biased as coaches, and we definitely look at our side of the elephant,” he said in his post-match press conference. “It’s probably difficult to look at the other side of the elephant — unless you are on top of it!
“I thought we had the better opportunities in the first half. I felt the second half was more even.”
He added: “For me, maybe I am slightly biased, I saw five big chances to us.
“The [Yoane] Wissa header, the [Mikkel] Damsgaard chance, the Bryan [Mbeumo] shot on transition, the Keane [Lewis-Potter] header on a set piece, and of course Sepp’s [van den Berg] big header.
“So I think if there should have been a winner, it should have been us.
“But I thought it was an even game, a good game between two teams. I’m very happy with our performance against a top club who have spent a few quid on players over the last year or two and a good manager, they are well coached.”
Frank was one of the managers linked with the Chelsea job in the summer before the appointment of Maresca.
The Brentford boss was said to be one of three managers under consideration for the job alongside Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna and Maresca, who had just led Leicester City to the Championship title.
Speaking about his future at the end of last season, Frank said: "If a big club one day comes to knock on my door, then I need to consider it but it's not something I'm hunting. I could stay in Brentford for… well, forever is probably a crazily long time but I could stay here for a further sustained period.
"One day maybe I need to try something else, I don't know. I'm more open. I'm happy here and sometimes you need to be careful what you wish for. Also, in football you can't plan. Keep your head down, work and see where it takes you."
