When Wrexham can secure promotion as Ryan Reynolds jets in
Wrexham have reached crunch time in their bid for a third consecutive promotion
Wrexham currently sit in second place in EFL League One, six points clear of third place Wycombe Wanderers who have a game in hand. After a perfect weekend of results, the next chapter of this remarkable story is close to being completed.
A win from Wycombe tomorrow would cut the gap to three points but with Wanderers not managing a victory in their last two games, Wrexham will be hoping their rivals stumble again in the race for automatic promotion.
So, with just five games left to go in their season, how can Ryan Reynolds' side wrap up yet another promotion?
Worst case scenario, if Wycombe were to win their remaining six games, Wrexham need to take 13 more points to secure an automatic promotion spot which would see them reach a tally of 93 points for the season.
However. Championship football may come far sooner after a closer look at the run in for both teams.
Wrexham’s final five games come against Wigan, Bristol Rovers, Blackpool, Charlton and Lincoln City, all of whom apart from Charlton sit below 10th in the table.
Compared to Wycombe who have Huddersfield, Stevenage, Bolton, Charlton, Leyton Orient and Stockport left to play, a run of games which includes contests against three sides currently occupying play-off sports, Wrexham on paper have the much easier end to their campaign.
If Wycombe lose their next game against Huddersfield and Wrexham win their next four then promotion will be certain by April 26 against Charlton, even if Wycombe win their remaining matches. If Wycombe were to drop points in their next three games and Wrexham win their next two, they could theoretically be promoted in just 11 days time on Good Friday against Bristol Rovers at home.
Despite this, promotion is by no means guaranteed and it could well come down to the final day of the league on May 3.
In their last game Wrexham took a 3-0 victory against Burton Albion, a fixture which owner Ryan Reynolds was in attendance.
“I'm delighted with the win. I thought started well first ten mins, the sending us gave us an advantage, but we were a bit laboured from and needed to step in quicker with the ball and improve the quality of our passes,” said manager Phil Parkinson.
“It was never going to be straight forward but we got the important breakthrough and after that you felt we would go and add to it,” he added.
As the season enters its final stretch, the Hollywood owners will be looking at making the trip across the Atlantic to watch the final games of their side's season as they have done for the last few years.
In a light-hearted video released on X and with Wrexham the favourites for promotion, owner Rob McElhenney said “should we book flights for a certain Welsh celebration?”
With the owners obviously confident of their team's chances to play in the Championship for the first time since 1982, their fate is now in their own hands.
