Fabian Schar admits he was devastated for a split second after his audacious shot from inside his own half bounced off the crossbar at the King Power Stadium.
The Swiss centre-back spotted Mads Hermansen off his line and attempted a wonder goal that would have been spoken about for years. The goal had shades of Man United star David Beckham at Wimbledon in 1996, while there were also comparisons to a similar long range strike against the Dons from Newcastle's very own midfield terrier David Batty.
Schar told Chronicle Live: "I was just thinking, 'hopefully this will be good' because I felt I'd hit it pretty well. I wanted to be the goal scorer. But at least we got a goal from this situation.
"It was just instinct in that situation. I saw the keeper was off his line and we could have scored from that. I felt it might be a bit too long but knew it had been hit well. When it hit the bar I was devastated. I was pretty happy that Jacob Murphy scored the goal because it was a big moment scoring so early in first half."
Schar's effort bounced back off the woodwork and fell to Jacob Murphy who applied the finish for his second of the night. When asked if he was down in the dumps about the moment, Schar added: "Yeah [it could have been a Beckham goal]. But I don't even get an assist.
"I don't practice that in training, it is just instinct and trust in your ability. It would have been nice to score but I'm happy with the three points."
After the game Eddie Howe praised Schar for his quick thinking and admitted that few would be capable of netting from that far out, saying: "He brings a flair that not many centre-backs can bring. It's another Fabian moment. For a split second, I thought it was in. There are not many centre-backs in football that can do what he can do."
