Mikel Arteta's side is gearing up for one of their most demanding and most crucial games of the season as they line up against a star-studded Real Madrid side.

With the Premier League seemingly out of the Gunners' grasp, the Champions League offers a chance to clinch some silverware and cement their place in European football. The trophy has eluded them throughout their history despite coming awfully close in 2006.

But tonight they face seasoned winners Real Madrid under their even more experienced manager Carlo Ancelotti who is looking to take the trophy home for the sixth time in his career.

The fixture in north London is almost too close to call, but legendary player turned pundit Alan Shearer has chipped in giving his expert thoughts on what is set to be a "cracker" of a game.

Speaking to Betfair, the former Newcastle United man said: "With Real Madrid's history, you have to say they'll win, but Arsenal will give them a really, really good game, and it isn't going to be easy for Madrid.

"Arsenal will be a really tough game for Real Madrid - I just think because of who they've got up top and their history."

Although Madrid showed some recent shaky form, coming off the back of a 2-1 loss to Valencia, Arsenal could create some problems although the 54-year-old is still backing Ancelotti's side.

Shearer added: "I have watched them a few times this season - they didn't qualify automatically from the league phase, but it's a football club that has to win that trophy and so many times have gone out and done that.

"So, for me, they're the team to beat, but I think that Arsenal will give them a really good game."

Bukayo Saka's return to the Arsenal squad could also provide a much-needed boost to Arsenal's attack who go without an out-and-out number nine after injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

It's not yet known if Arteta will throw him into the deep end and choose him to start or if he'll be ready to make an impact off the bench but either way, Shearer believes it will give the side a much-needed boost.

He added: "Bukayo Saka is one of, if not, Arsenal's main players. It really hurt them when he was out injured. I've been in his position, having been out for a bit longer actually, and when you've been out for four months there's always doubts about how long it's going to take to get back to where he was.

"There's no doubt that he will, but there's always a slight question mark about how long it's going to take. But for him to come on last week and score within six minutes, for his confidence it will do him the world of good.

"He won't be far away from starting and that can only be a good thing for Arsenal to have him back."
