Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa is a target for Sunderland, according to South African news outlet Soccer Laduma. The Black Cats recruitment has been good on the whole, with the odd exception.
The majority of recruits have been young players to progress but there have been more experienced additions like Chris Mepham, Alan Browne and Wilson Isidor this season. Loan recruit Jayden Danns is at the other end of the scale in terms of the club doing good business. Now, Sunderland have been linked with a move for 28-year-old sMabasa.
A report from well-followed South African news outlet Soccer Laduma claims the Championship promotion contenders have been impressed by Mabasa while scouting Thalente Mbatha.
Mabasa has spent his entire career in South Africa, joining the Pirates in 2019. A work permit would be required for him to play in England for Sunderland, or any other club in the United Kingdom for that matter.
Mabasa has 13 goals in 36 games this season, including a hat-trick on Christmas Eve against Marumo Gallants. A record of 44 goals in 120 games for Orlando Pirates.
While he does not fit the usual Sunderland profile, it remains to be seen whether anything comes of the interest. There is also the small matter of what division the club will be in next season with the priority a focus on promotion to the Premier League.
