Simon Jordan makes Birmingham City claim after 'utter domination' in promotion

Pundit Simon Jordan believes Birmingham City can seal a return to the Premier League within the next couple of years after propelling themselves back into the Championship

Simon Jordan says it wouldn't surprise him if either of Birmingham City or Wrexham found themselves in the Premier League within the next two or three years, after the former secured automatic promotion from League One and an instant return to the Championship on Tuesday night.

Blues saw off Peterborough United, their Vertu Trophy final opponents at Wembley on Sunday, thanks to goals from Alfie May and Taylor Gardner-Hickman to hit 95 points - an insurmountable total which lifted them out of the reach of Wycombe Wanderers, despite their own midweek success.

Blues can begin to slowly prepare for the summer transfer window behind the scenes, although clearly on the pitch there remains plenty to contest for and record points tallies to chase down.

Is delivering promotion this season under Chris Davies simply what was the minimum requirement considering the investment into the squad during last summer's overhaul, or in fact a real achievement considering what can happen to big clubs who suffer a dip into the lower echelons of the football pyramid?

"Both. You have to look at the fact that this club should never have been relegated. They had been in situ for a period of time, some of the decisions they made created this outcome," Jordan told talkSPORT.

"They had the former Man City chief executive giving them advice and making appointment decisions like Wayne Rooney, while preaching that they were going to move forward and ended up getting relegated. They had to take responsibility for it, and they have.

"They've invested £35m in transfer fees in League One and, with that kind of money, that kind of expenditure and budget, then they should get out of the division - but, as big clubs if not bigger clubs like Sunderland have gone down there and stayed there for a period of time. Getting out in the first instance is what they should've done, but often it doesn't happen.

"You have to give credit to them. Earlier this season all the great and good turned up and Beckham made this observation that he hadn't experience an atmosphere like it for some time - I made the observation he's been watching too much of Inter Miami. Fact of the matter is they've got out, and if they carry on the way they're going they're going to get out with 110 points.

"It's a huge total, utter domination and it could propel them forward. I wouldn't be surprised if the momentum propels them into the Championship and we see them being really competitive. If Wrexham come up, all of a sudden we have American owners bloody everywhere.

"They've cut their teeth, they've made their mistakes, they've learned lessons and they've got promoted. They've got a big project - there's a lot of dough around these football clubs. I would not be surprised if either one of these clubs ended up in the Premier League in the next two or three years."
