Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris confirmed Jobe Bellingham’s absence from Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw at Norwich City was precautionary.
Sunderland secured a place in the Championship play-offs after the stalemate, without one of their most influential players.
The midfielder, who has been a regular feature throughout the campaign, missed the trip to Carrow Road, but the head coach provided a positive update.
“He’s okay,” said Le Bris. “It’s not a serious injury. Although he wants to play every game, today was an opportunity for him to refresh.”
The 19-year-old has made 36 championship appearances this season and has been a vital figure in the Lads’ push for promotion. Le Bris continued: “We’re able to manage the squad to keep everyone in their best shape, and that was the decision here.”
The Frenchman wants Sunderland to maintain their momentum heading into the final stages of the season, particularly with the play-offs at the end of it. But with Sunderland having already secured their place, he knows the pressure is off and he can rotate his squad.
He added: "The good thing about our position is it gives us a chance to manage the squad, give different players a chance to show what they can do."
“We’re in a really good place at this stage of the season, so it’s possible to manage the squad and keep everyone fresh – that’s a key objective for the remainder of the campaign.
"I think the focus has been clear. We want to build strong momentum and not waste time. We had three good games since the international break. Two wins and a draw at Norwich which was a good result I think.
"We are still building this spirit to be competitive until the end.”
Le Bris could ring the changes again on Saturday when Sunderland host Swansea City at the Stadium of Light.
