Andre Onana concedes 'awful' Man Utd howler with Nemanja Matic 'assist' as fans explode over latest error
The two players were in a war of words ahead of the Europa League clash between Lyon and the Red Devils
Nemanja Matic will have worn a wry smile on is face after Andre Onana committed an "awful" howler for Lyon's first goal.
The French club took the lead in the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Manchester United via a goal from Thiago Almada.
The Argentine midfielder's in-direct free kick was floated into the box on 25 minutes but neither set of players made any connection with the ball.
Onana, 29, appeared to go down in stages before missing the ball completely as it nestled into the bottom corner.
The Cameroon keeper looked ashen-faced afterwards and the Serbian's words this week must have been ringing in his ears.
The 36-year-old midfielder, who started on the bench, blasted the keeper as among the 'worst' goalkeepers in Red Devils history in response to comments the Old Trafford giants are "way better" than the Ligue 1 outfit.
Onana bit back at the ex-Chelsea man, quipping "at least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world".
But the stats don't lie. Opta revealed that since the start of last season, no goalkeeper has made more errors leading to goals for Premier League clubs in all competitions than Onana (8).
Paul Scholes, speaking on TNT Sports, said he thinks Onana should have "kept his mouth shut" over the "awful" mistake.
United fans took to X to unload on the Red Devils shot stopper who was once again at fault, this time on the European stage.
One wrote: "100th Onana howler unlocked."
Anther posted: "This is Onana focused and 100% knowing the world is watching him."
An X user quipped: "He is proving Matic right!"
ESPN UK joked: "Onana looked to be at fault for Lyon's goal. Nemanja Matic assist."
