IT'S the kind of prospect which must stick in the throat of Barry Ferguson, Ally McCoist or any other Rangers fan.

But Gers hero McCoist has told Ferguson that he must give in to reality when it comes to selecting his team for Sunday's Premiership clash against Aberdeen - even though he knows a slip up there could hand deadly rivals Celtic the title.

The Gers travel to face the Dons knowing that a Celtic victory against Kilmarnock the day before would leave them on the cusp of a fourth successive title.

But McCoist reckons Ferguson simply has no choice but to "pick a team with Thursday in mind" when it comes to Sunday's game.

The Gers boss lost the likes of Bailey Rice and Dujon Sterling to injury in the course of the Europa League quarter final first leg against Athletic Bilbao.

He can at least welcome John Souttar and Mohamed Diomande back after suspension, although whether he would want to play them with such a monumental clash just days away remains to be seen.

McCoist told TNT Sports: "I'm about to say something crazy.

"Barry has to pick a team with Thursday in mind in Sunday's game."

Fellow pundit Alex Rae, a member of Philippe Clement's backroom team of course, was alongside him post-match.

He asked: "Are you saying rest a few?"

As McCoist considered his answer, host Emma Dodds cut in to say that they had run out of time.

McCoist replied: "You've saved me!"
