You can't put a price on greatness.

So whatever it has cost for Liverpool to keep Mo Salah at Anfield, the outcome is priceless. Because Liverpool have secured the services of a world class talent.

One of the best footballers of his generation. And one of the greatest Liverpool has ever had, which is quite a compliment considering the sensational talents that have graced the red half of Merseyside down the decades.

All at a time when Arne Slot's team appear capable of becoming the next dominant force in English football. Manchester City are in decline. Manchester United are bobbins, while the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea are not on the same level as Liverpool. And this fact is mainly down to Salah.

The bloke supporters call the 'Egyptian King' will now remain on his throne and look to help Liverpool win more trophies, starting with this season's Premier League title.

Salah signed his new Liverpool extension

Handing a bumper deal to someone who will turn 33 in June is not normal. But then again, Salah is not your average player.

He remains at the peak of his powers. He remains driven. He remains motivated. And most importantly of all, he remains in love with Liverpool. The club can be an intoxicating one for footballers like Salah.

In recent months he has had offers from Europe, Saudi Arabia and the MLS. And he gave supporters palpitations when suggesting he was "more out than in". That this could be his last season at Anfield. But deep down in his heart, he never wanted to leave Liverpool.

He just wanted to give the club's owners a dig in the ribs, to make them appreciate what they had. Which Fenway Sports Group (FSG) eventually have done, ripping up their 'Moneyball' philosophy that has previously made them reluctant to award lucrative deals to those over 30.

FSG have acknowledged Salah is a special case. Thus allowing Slot to plan for the future, safe in the knowledge he has a genuine icon, one of the greatest stars of this era, in his team. And Salah gets the chance to write more chapters of his remarkable story on Merseyside.

Despite all his success, Salah remains humble and honest. A manager's dream. And his contribution remains the heartbeat of Liverpool.

His current tally of 243 Liverpool goals in 394 games now places him third in their all-time scorers, behind Roger Hunt and Ian Rush. This season alone he has plundered 27 goals.

News he is going nowhere will be bad for Liverpool's main rivals. But there is no question it is good for English football in general.

Watching Salah weave his magic is one of the game's great privileges, irrespective of who you support. He is one of the reasons the Premier League is the most exciting one on the planet.

Which all begs the question, what were FSG playing at allowing contract talks to go on for so long?

Who knows. But thankfully they saw sense in the end.
