Ange Postecoglou has delivered the latest update on Tottenham captain Son Heung-min's contract situation and explained why Mikey Moore's game time has dried up in recent months.
Son has struggled for consistency this season yet has still produced 23 goal involvements in 43 matches across all competitions. The Spurs captain turns 33 this summer and will enter the final year of his contract after the north London club triggered a 12-month extension to his last deal. which would have run out this year otherwise.
Postecoglou was asked whether he was aware of any movement on a new contract for the South Korean star beyond the option the club took up.
"Don’t think so. We triggered the extension. Apart from that, no," said the Tottenham boss. "I think all those things we will address at the appropriate time. I don’t think now is the time to look at that.
"Certainly at the end of the year there will be a point of review where we look at where we are as a squad and do some forward-planning – if I’m here, mate. And look at what next year looks like and beyond. I’m sure Sonny will be part of those discussions."
At the other end of the age spectrum is 17-year-old Mikey Moore. The youngster burst on to the scene towards the end of last season and this campaign has scored his first goal for the club in Europa League, along with an assist, and grabbed his first assist in the Premier League.
His vice-captain James Maddison said he thought 'Neymar was on the wing' after one thrilling performance from Moore against AZ in the Europa League group stages.
In all, the teenager has made 18 senior appearances for the north London club in the past year, around a virus that took him out of action for two months during this campaign.
Since then Moore was taken off at half-time in back-to-back matches against Brentford in the Premier League and Aston Villa in the FA Cup and has not had any game time since February.
"We’ve exposed Mikey a hell of a lot more than I thought we would at the start of the year," explained Postecoglou. "He only just started playing Under-21 football last year and he had some injuries, didn’t play a lot. It was kind of touch-and-go at the start of the year, do we let him bed in with the 21’s or give him a loan or keep him with us?
"But my thing was ‘Let him train for a year, train with men, train in the first team environment and see how he adapts. At the end of that he’ll still be 17 or 18 and we can make decisions', but he’s played a lot more than we thought. But he’s very much a part of our set-up in the first-team and he’s training every day.
"We’ll see the benefits of that in years to come, we don’t need to be in a rush with Mikey. He’s a very talented player and he’s working hard. Physically I still sense he’s growing into his body. We’ve seen with Lucas [Bergvall] this year, the difference in 12 months in young players is quite transforming. I think Mikey will be in a similar boat. We’re still very happy with him and we’re sure he’ll keep developing."
