Manchester City star Phil Foden's mum was at the centre of vile chants from Manchester United fans - and his gran has now fired back at the Red Devils

Phil Foden's gran has fired back at Manchester United fans after vile taunts about his mum in the Manchester derby.

Foden's mum, Claire Rowlands, was at the centre of chants from Red Devils fans during their bore draw last Sunday. United fans branded her a 's***' before his substitution in the 58th minute.

And Foden's paternal grandmother has now told the Daily Mail: "It really upset me and the whole of the family, it’s disgusting. It really hurt to hear what was being shouted by the fans about Claire.

"These people need to have a good look at themselves. Claire is a wonderful woman and mother. I don’t want to say too much because it makes me so angry and makes me feel sick."

Speaking after the game, Pep Guardiola said: "It's a lack of class. But it's not United, it's the people, you know? We are so exposed, people who are on the screen in world football: managers, owners, and football players especially.

"Honestly, I don't understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil. It's a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed."

Foden, himself, hasn't addressed the claims - instead posting on Instagram: "We keep going."

By the high standards set by Foden and his colleagues, this season has been disappointing for many. The 24-year-old has netted 10 goals and provided six assists in 40 appearances amidst City's struggles.

His position in the England team has come under scrutiny, as he hasn't played a full 90 minutes in either of last month's World Cup qualifying matches.

After Foden netted twice in the 6-0 victory over Ipswich in January, Guardiola hinted at the midfielder dealing with "problems".

The City manager opened up about the progress of one of his players: "We spoke many times the last month, and he was a completely different boy to how he arrived at the beginning of the season," he said.

"He had a few problems, but they are human beings and sometimes when you have a setback and that is normal. But we are really pleased that he is happy again and enjoying playing, and that is really good for all of us."
