Aston Villa's Marco Asensio misses two penalties in same game against Southampton - who else has in Premier League era?

Paris Saint-Germain loanee Marco Asensio put himself among a list of three other players for his unwanted feat during Aston Villa's 3-0 win over Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday. The former Real Madrid forward missed two penalties in the same match, first in the 69th minute and then in stoppage-time, becoming the first player to do so in the English top-flight in nine years.

Marco Asensio has been a Premier League player for a little over two months, and has already made a piece of unfortunate history with a startling feat in his side's 3-0 win over Southampton.
In a gristly affair against the already-relegated Saints, it took Aston Villa until the 73rd minute to open the scoring through Ollie Watkins.
From there, it was straightforward for Unai Emery's UEFA Champions League-jostling side, who posted a further two goals through Donyell Malen and John McGinn late on.
For Paris Saint-Germain loanee Asensio, though, the trip to St Mary's was still an afternoon to forget.
The former Real Madrid forward, who has scored eight goals for Villa since his loan move late in the January window, remarkably scuppered two penalties in the final 25 minutes of the game, banding him alongside just three other players to complete the unfortunate feat in the Premier League era.
Asensio first saw his strike thwarted by Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on 69 minutes, as the Spain international failed to capitalise on the chance to open the scoring for his side in what, up until that point, had been a turgid afternoon on the South Coast.
The loanee was given an opportunity for retribution in the fourth minute of stoppage-time, stepping back up to the spot after Jack Stephens brought down McGinn in the box.
Ramsdale, again, was equal to it - though Asensio's blushes were spared as McGinn mopped up the spillage from the Saints 'keeper.
Speaking after the match, Villa boss Emery established the clear order of penalty takers in the squad.
"We have our penalty shooter and the first one is Marcus Rashford," he said. "The second is Marco Asensio, the third and others are Youri Tielemans, John McGinn and Ollie Watkins."
So who did Asensio join on the list of players to miss two penalties in the same match, and when was the last time that happened in the Premier League?
Saido Berahino v Watford (April 16, 2016)
Two names from a classic Premier League era of yesteryear combined to create the last moment a player missed two penalties in a top-flight match - as Heurelho Gomes' heroics denied Saido Berahino twice from the spot.
After Ben Watson opened the scoring for Quique Sanchez Flores' Watford, Berahino had the opportunity to bring West Bromwich Albion level in the 67th minute.
Gomes, though, was equal to the striker's tame effort, diving down to his right to keep his side ahead.
Berahino, though, was handed the opportunity to atone for his earlier error when West Brom were again awarded a penalty three minutes from time.

His answer? Another strike with little power, this time down to Gomes' left.
The inspired Watford goalkeeper again guessed correctly, making no room for a follow-up with a strong palm away - protecting his side's slender lead and rightfully taking the plaudits for a display of outrageous bottle.
Darren Bent v Tottenham (April 3, 2010)
Something was clearly in the April air for Gomes, because the Brazilian shot-stopper was again between the sticks when Darren Bent scuppered two spot-kicks against Tottenham Hotspur in 2010.
Gomes remarkably thwarted Bent twice from the spot, but the former England striker softened the blow by still dispatching another penalty in the match - Sunderland being awarded three during their 3-1 win at the Stadium of Light - Bent also scoring from open play alongside Boudewijn Zenden's goal.
Bent, at the time, was well-accustomed to penalty goals - which perhaps spoke more to Gomes' excellent, instinctual ability in spot-kick situations than any shortcomings from the Sunderland frontman.

Juan Pablo Angel v Fulham (February 2, 2005)
Aston Villa's Juan Pablo Angel became the first player to ever miss two penalties in the Premier League era, fumbling his spot-kicks into the grateful clutches of Edwin van der Sar during a costly 1-1 draw against Fulham.
Angel had opened the scoring for Villa, but saw his first penalty saved by Van der Sar, who went on to produce similarly impressive heroics in a Manchester United shirt throughout his storied career.
There was controversy surrounding Angel's second missed penalty, however. The Colombian stepped up when Villa were awarded a second penalty, supposedly against the wishes of Villa boss David O'Leary.
Angel missed, and soon after, Lee Clark netted a last-gasp equaliser to condemn Villa to a crushing draw.
Roy Aitken - at the time, Villa's assistant manager - criticised Angel after the match, saying the forward would be removed from penalty-taking responsibilities for the rest of the 2004/05 season.
"He [Angel] should have stepped aside, which the manager isn't best pleased about. Juan's not on penalties for the rest of the season," Aitken said in 2005.
"It doesn't feel like a defeat. It feels like two lost points. To lose a goal with the last kick of the game was frustrating. That should have been our second away win this season. It's been two points lost tonight.
"We played so well at time. The equaliser was their first shot on target in the second half. The penalties have cost us the game."
