Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has said Andre Onana needs time to "disconnect" after omitting him from the matchday squad for this afternoon's clash with Newcastle United.

It was reported by the Manchester Evening News this morning that Onana had not travelled to St James' Park with the rest of his teammates, with it understood Amorim had made the decision to take him out of the firing line.

The Cameroonian was the centre of attention following Thursday night's 2-2 draw with Lyon in the Europa League after committing two costly errors. He was guilty of failing to hold onto Georges Mikautadze's shot in the last minute of injury time, allowing Rayan Cherki to score a dramatic equaliser and deny United a first leg victory.

Onana, who has been replaced by Altay Bayindir between the sticks, could return in goal for the second leg of the quarter-final against the French side at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

Explaining why he has made a change in goal, Amorim told Sky Sports: "Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit.

"Tomorrow, he will be in training to prepare for the next one so I felt that it was a good time for Andre to disconnect."

Explaining why he has handed a full debut to Harry Amass, Amorim, in a separate interview with MUTV, said: "I think he's doing the right things. He's training quite well.

"And then when you have situations when you have to rotate some players, they deserve the opportunity, but they have to show.

"No big pressure on him. He knows what to do. He needs to enjoy and it's a good game for him to feel what it is to play for Manchester United."
