Gary Lineker drops illuminating Ange claim that chimes with Celtic era as he nails toiling Tottenham boss

Spurs fell to a staggering 17th league defeat of the season on Sunday with the Aussie facing an uphill battle to keep his job

Ange Postecoglou has the body language of a beaten man who knows that time is almost up at Tottenham.

That is the view of Spurs and England legend Gary Lineker, who feels that the struggling Aussie has gone about trying to galvanise his struggling team's fortunes in the wrong way.

The Lilywhites season got from bad to worse as they fell to a dismal 4-2 defeat to Wolves on Sunday, their 17th loss in 32 Premier League matches that has left them languishing in 15th place, eight points adrift of the top half.

Spurs are still in the Europa League and face Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of their quarter final clash in Germany on Thursday with the scores level at 1-1 but many disgruntled fans have had enough of the Celtic hero and don't believe he should still be at the helm when that game runs around.

Lineker - who plundered 80 goals in 138 matches for Tottenham between 1989 and 1992 - has been a staunch defender of Postecoglou and his style of play but now believes that the mounting pressure is getting the better of the experienced coach.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, he said: Yeah, I’ve obviously stuck up for the football because I enjoy watching Spurs play, but it’s almost like it’s got a bit too much for him.

"The way things have gone, obviously it’s not easy dealing with defeat after defeat or struggling performances.

"But I think, and I echo your sentiments in terms of the press conferences, sometimes saying things like the footballing gods are against us.

"Even if you do get a bit of bad luck and constantly the world’s against us whining a little bit. I think it’s probably his first time. He’s really had an awful patch as a coach, as a manager everywhere else he’s been.

"But obviously the Premier League, it’s a sterner test than he’s had before. I think that’s fair to say. But there is still a possibility that he could end up winning a trophy and qualify for the Champions League.

"But I think it’s a long shot now because they do seem to be… and you know what it’s like Micah when you’re in a side that’s struggling and results are not going, you’re bereft of confidence and you need a little bit of something.

"But his body language at present almost suggests that he’s downbeat and I think that’s not what you need.

"As a player, you need your manager to lift you up when things are not going that well. And it’s a shame.

It’s tough for Tottenham, but hopefully they can do something in Europe. And I’m sure he had his one eye on that this week because that will possibly be his salvation this season."
