Andre Onana reportedly plans to stay and face the music at Manchester United despite the prospect of a lucrative escape route. The former Inter Milan goalkeeper has been unable to shake off his error-prone streak in nearly two years at Old Trafford, and he was left out of the matchday squad altogether over the weekend.

Two Onana howlers cost United dearly in Lyon last week, and ensured they will go into Thursday's Europa League quarter-final second leg level pegging. The £47million man fumbled a free-kick into his own net in the first half, and then spilled a shot straight into the path of Rayan Cherki in stoppage time on a night when he was under pressure to perform.

Onana had struck back at Lyon's Nemanja Matic for calling him one of the worst United goalkeepers in history. But his performance raised fresh questions about his suitability for the Red Devils' No. 1 jersey.

Saudi Pro League sides showed interest in the 29-year-old last summer, and a selection are believed to have retained an admiration in spite of his mistakes. But according to The Sun, Onana wants to re-establish himself, prove his critics wrong and stay at Old Trafford.

Rumours around Onana quitting United ramped up recently when he signed for a new agency, which some viewed as a move to help facilitate an exit.

Although Onana seemingly wants to stay put, United chiefs may not give him the chance to salvage his reputation. They are reportedly scouring the market for goalkeeper options, with Aaron Ramsdale featuring on their list despite him spending a torrid season with Championship-bound Southampton, and Zion Suzuki another long-term target.

Amorim gave back-up stopper Altay Bayindir a chance to impress at St. James' Park on Sunday. But United were blown away in a 4-1 defeat to Newcastle, and Bayindir made an error directly leading to Bruno Guimaraes scoring the final goal of the game.

Amorim has stressed that Onana will have a route back into the starting line-up after taking some time to mentally reset. He said: "Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit.

"He will be in training to prepare for the next game so I felt that it was a good time for Andre to disconnect. It's a normal situation. You have to manage everything, sometimes people just look at the physical aspect but the mental aspect is really, really important. It's for just one game and we give Altay an opportunity, he deserves it."
