Many managers wanted Chris Davies' job - he can take Birmingham City to the Premier League

Former Birmingham City striker Clinton Morrison knows that 'every manager out of work' wanted the Blues job in the summer before they opted for Chris Davies - and after witnessing what they've been able to achieve this term under him, the pundit is of the belief Blues can put together successive promotions.

Davies left Tottenham, where he was assisting Ange Postecoglou, last summer to branch out into management himself and, save for the blot on the copybook at Wembley on Sunday, it has otherwise been a memorable first campaign in charge of a football club for Davies, who has also worked at the likes of Liverpool, Leicester City and Celtic before Spurs.

Davies has overseen a remarkable 39 wins in 54 matches so far, with among the games Blues haven't won including meetings with Premier League opponents Fulham and Newcastle United. Morrison acknowledged his coaching credentials prior to his appointment but is still impressed by Davies' results when under such pressure to deliver.

That said, having watched from afar how they've fared in League One amid a crazy schedule - because of various cup commitments Blues will have played 60 matches by the end of the season - Morrison thinks Davies can repeat what Ipswich Town achieved between 2022 and 2024 and make the leap to the Premier League in the space of two seasons.

"He has always been a good coach and you have read about what he can do on the training pitch, but to come in and deliver at a big club where the fans and owners expect you to deliver isn’t easy," Morrison told Vertu.

"I think the squad is good enough to go back-to-back, and I think they will make further investment in the summer, but he has done a fantastic job. When the Birmingham job came up, I know for a fact that every manager who was out of work wanted it because they knew how big the club is and the great potential there is. Hopefully they can kick on from what has been achieved this season.

"You always expected Birmingham City to be favourites for the league this season but you never think it will be as good as it has been, as they have spent a lot of money and there was pressure on the club and pressure on the manager.

"They delivered and are champions which is brilliant for the club but when you sign players like Stansfield – who is a Championship player at least, who could play in the Premier League – and Iwata who they signed from Celtic, they are top players. Fair play to the manager and they players."
